Introduction:

Thruster brake is used to hold the speed of moving machinery, and to stop the machine accurately to desired place. A pre-stressed compression spring is utilized to apply the braking force to the brake shoe. With shoes press on the revolving brake drum retarding the speed and ultimately stopping the machinery. The compressing of the spring and releasing of the brake is done by the Thruster. The thruster shoe brake features a couple of cast iron shoes, which are lined up with the friction pads.

The shoes are hinged on the side arm and the main arm of brake, each having a hinge pin set in the base. They are attached to each other on the top by a tie rod, which is hinged in the principal arm and fastened to the swivel block in the side arm by a lock nut. A crank lever is attached on the main arm, and other end is set to the top clevis of thruster by a hinge pin. The main arm has a brake spring which is locked with a lock nut on the lever. Pre tension in this spring determines the braking torque.
